The USS Drum, a WWII submarine, is open for tours at the USS Alabama Memorial Park, a brief spin after the massive battleship for which the parked is named. This is what you encounter as you descend into the belly of the ship, which I thought looked like a scene straight out of a Jules Verne story: at once old-fashioned and also futuristic, with all the shiny surfaces and gauges. Please note, however, a submarine is a tube with one way in and one way out – your attention to the direction of traffic, and general courtesy to others touring the vessel, is appreciated. (Of course, it\’s not really a vacation until you run into that guy and his family. In the South we say, \”Bless their hearts.\”)
