Taken atop Mount Pisgah, near Asheville, North Carolina, a radio tower reaches into the unknown as fog envelops the top of the mountain.
In between workshops in Asheville last autumn, I took advantage of my down time to do this 2+ mile hike, despite the weather. Actually, the weather made it rather magical. Though I was not greeted with a full panorama at the top of the trail, the fog during the ascent, clouds draping low in the sky, offered a wholly different experience. There is something quite magical about forest walking through wisps of the heavens.
With a trailhead just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, this hike can be challenging due to its rocky, occasionally steep climb. However, I saw people of ages and abilities out on the trail that day. If you are in the Asheville area, I highly recommend it. And if you aren\’t the hiking type, do yourself a favor and take an hour or two to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway. Don\’t expect to get far, you\’ll keep wanting to pull off at the overlooks. Pack a picnic and enjoy!
